Seven Men Arrested in Bauchi Over Alleged Wife-Swapping After ‘Prophetic Dream’

Azare, Bauchi State — Residents of parts of Katagum Local Government Area in Bauchi State have been left stunned following the arrest of seven men accused of engaging in wife-swapping after allegedly acting on what authorities described as a “spiritual instruction” received in a dream.
The arrests were carried out by the local Hisbah Board after complaints from community members triggered an investigation into unusual marital arrangements among a group reportedly identified as Wuddadu.
Speaking on the development, the Head of the Hisbah Board in Katagum LGA, Malam Ridwani Muhammad Khairan, said preliminary findings revealed that one of the suspects, identified as Muhammad Awwal, claimed he was directed through a dream to encourage the practice.
According to Khairan, Awwal allegedly told investigators that he saw a prophet in his dream who instructed members of the group to exchange their wives, a claim authorities say later influenced the actions of the men involved.
“One of them, Muhammad Awwal, confirmed to us that he got this knowledge from a dream, saying that he had a dream of a prophet and that is why they persuaded their wives to do this act,” Khairan said.
Authorities said the development raised serious concerns within the conservative community, where strict religious and cultural values strongly shape social conduct.
Residents described the allegations as shocking and difficult to comprehend, with many expressing fears over what they called the dangerous misuse of spiritual claims to influence personal decisions.
The Hisbah Board condemned the alleged practice, describing it as a direct violation of Islamic teachings and moral standards upheld in the area.
Officials confirmed that the seven suspects remain in custody while investigations continue to determine whether the group acted independently or was connected to a broader ideological movement.
Security and religious authorities are also examining whether similar activities may have taken place secretly in other communities.
The incident has since generated widespread debate across the region, with religious leaders and residents calling for greater awareness about spiritual manipulation, extremist interpretations of faith, and the influence of closed social groups.
