Man Allegedly Uses Pestle to Kill Girlfriend Over HIV Infection Dispute, Wraps Her Remains and Dumps Them in Toilet
A 30-year-old man, Okpara Chibuike Emmanuel, has allegedly used a pestle to kill his girlfriend, identified as Chinyere, before wrapping her remains in nylon and dumping them in the toilet of his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu, following an argument over allegations that one of them infected the other with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the Enugu State Police Command has said.
The suspect allegedly struck Chinyere on the head with a pestle during the argument, causing her death, before wrapping her remains in nylon and concealing them inside the toilet of his apartment at Olympic Layout, One-Day, Enugu.
The police said Emmanuel was arrested on Monday, September 21, 2026, at about 6:30 p.m., after neighbours reportedly detected the offensive odour from the decomposing body and forced open the door of his apartment.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the suspect was initially apprehended by an angry mob before police operatives attached to Awkunanaw Division arrived and took him into custody.
The police said preliminary investigation indicated that the alleged killing occurred on September 19.
During interrogation, Emmanuel allegedly confessed to the crime and told investigators that the incident followed an argument with his girlfriend over allegations concerning HIV infection.
The remains of the deceased were evacuated to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while the police said efforts were ongoing to establish her full identity and locate her relatives.
The incident has also raised fresh concerns about the escalation of disputes between intimate partners into violence, particularly where allegations surrounding sexual health and HIV status are involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a discreet and thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
He directed that the suspect be arraigned in court upon completion of the investigation.
The Commissioner also advised members of the public, particularly young women, to inform trusted relatives or friends about their movements and exercise caution concerning people they visit or spend time with.
The police said investigation into the case is ongoing.
