IGP Disu Assures Oyo Residents as Police Intensify Hunt for School Kidnappers

Fear and anxiety gripped residents of Yawota and Esiele communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on Friday following the abduction of pupils, students and school staff by armed kidnappers who attacked two schools in the area.
The attackers, reportedly riding motorcycles, stormed Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, and Community Grammar School, which shares premises with L.A Primary School in Esiele, during school hours and whisked away several victims, including staff members.
In response to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, visited the affected communities to assess the security situation and reassure residents that security agencies were making significant progress toward rescuing the abducted victims.
Addressing anxious parents and community members, the police chief said tactical teams had intensified search-and-rescue operations across nearby forests where the kidnappers were believed to have fled.
“I assure you that we are working tirelessly behind the scenes to secure the safe return of everyone abducted. We have made substantial progress in the ongoing operations, and I am confident that positive developments will soon emerge,” Disu stated.
The abduction, which reportedly occurred around 9:30 a.m., triggered panic across the communities as parents rushed to schools in search of their children.
The Oyo State Police Command confirmed that the attackers abducted several pupils, students and staff members, including Vice Principal Mrs. Alamu Folawe.
Police spokesperson DSP Ayanlade Olayinka disclosed in a statement that no pupil or student had been confirmed dead at the time of filing the report. However, an assistant headmaster identified as Mr. Adesiyan was reportedly killed during the attack.
The command also confirmed that an okada rider was shot dead after allegedly resisting attempts by the attackers to seize his motorcycle.
According to the police, the gunmen escaped with a Toyota Corolla belonging to the abducted vice principal before later setting the vehicle ablaze along a route leading into the forest.
Security operatives have since launched coordinated rescue operations, deploying tactical units, surveillance assets and intelligence teams across vulnerable areas in the local government.
Disu further assured residents that additional security deployments had been made to prevent further attacks and restore public confidence.
“There is no cause for panic. Our officers are fully on ground to ensure the protection of lives and property. Residents should continue their lawful activities while remaining vigilant and cooperative with security agencies,” he said.
The incident has renewed concerns over increasing attacks on schools and rural communities in parts of Nigeria, with residents calling for stronger security measures around educational institutions and remote settlements.
