President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and major media organisations have expressed grief over the sudden death of the Publisher of The Eagle Online, Mr. Dotun Oladipo, describing his passing as a painful loss to Nigeria’s media industry and the nation.
Oladipo, a veteran journalist and former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), died suddenly on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, at the age of 56, sending shock waves across the Nigerian media community.
President Tinubu, in his condolence message, described Oladipo’s death as a painful loss to the Nigerian media community and acknowledged his contributions to journalism, particularly political reporting and the development of digital journalism through The Eagle Online.
The President noted that Oladipo devoted significant years of his life to informing Nigerians and contributing to the country’s democratic development, adding that his contributions to political journalism and the digital media space would remain memorable.
Senate President Akpabio also mourned the veteran journalist, describing him as a courageous, principled and dedicated journalist who devoted a significant part of his life to truth, responsible journalism and the advancement of society.
Akpabio said Oladipo’s commitment to professional excellence, integrity and public interest left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s media industry.
Lagos State Governor Sanwo-Olu described Oladipo’s death as “shocking, painful and heartbreaking”, while commiserating with his family, the management and staff of Premium Eagle Media Limited and the wider media community.
The governor described him as a cerebral and prolific writer whose pioneering work contributed significantly to the growth of online journalism in Nigeria.
The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) also expressed sadness over his death, describing Oladipo as a gentleman and great journalist whose decades-long career was defined by professionalism, courage, intellectual depth and commitment to journalism and nation-building.
The International Press Institute (IPI Nigeria) mourned him as an excellent journalist and passionate defender of press freedom, while the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) described his death as a huge loss to the Nigerian media community.
The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, which Oladipo led as President between 2017 and 2021, also mourned its former leader, recalling his important role in the development and professionalisation of online publishing in Nigeria.
A career spanning traditional and digital journalism
Oladipo’s journalism career spanned nearly three decades and included some of Nigeria’s leading media organisations.
He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992, before embarking on a career that took him through the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun.
He later joined PUNCH Newspapers, where he rose to become Politics Editor and also served on the newspaper’s Editorial Board.
His extensive experience in traditional journalism eventually took him into digital publishing, leading to the establishment of The Eagle Online under Premium Eagle Media Limited.
At a time when online journalism was still developing rapidly in Nigeria, Oladipo became one of the journalists who helped demonstrate that digital publishing could combine speed, professional journalism and credible news reporting.
His leadership of GOCOP further established him as one of the influential figures in Nigeria’s emerging online media industry.
Remembered by colleagues
Beyond his positions as publisher, editor and media entrepreneur, Oladipo was remembered by colleagues as a dedicated newsroom professional who understood the demands of journalism and publishing.
PRNigeria Publisher, Yushau A. Shuaib, in a tribute, recalled communicating with Oladipo on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 25—hours before his death.
According to Shuaib, Oladipo received a report, requested that it be sent to another email address, published it within minutes and later promoted it as the lead story in his WhatsApp news broadcast.
The account has become particularly poignant among his colleagues, illustrating that Oladipo remained actively engaged in journalism until the day he died.
A bridge between old and new media
Oladipo’s professional legacy cuts across Nigeria’s traditional newspaper industry and the modern digital media environment.
Trained in the conventional newsroom, he successfully transitioned into online publishing and became an important participant in the evolution of Nigeria’s digital journalism ecosystem.
Through The Eagle Online and his professional leadership, he contributed to the growth of online journalism and efforts to promote greater professionalism among digital publishers.
His sudden death at 56 has consequently left a vacuum among journalists, online publishers and professional colleagues who worked with him over the years.
The media community has continued to pour out tributes and condolences to his family, colleagues and associates, remembering him for his professionalism, commitment to journalism, intellectual depth and contribution to the development of Nigeria’s media industry.
Dotun Oladipo may have exited the newsroom, but the professional footprints he left across Nigeria’s traditional and digital media landscape will remain part of the country’s journalism history.
May his soul rest in peace.
