Abstract
The rise of social media has transformed the ways in which domestic conflicts involving celebrities are discussed, interpreted, and judged in Nigeria. This paper examines the influence of gender and age on social media users’ attitudes toward domestic conflict among Nigerian celebrities. Drawing from theories of media effects, social learning, and gender socialization, the study explores how commentators on platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube react to incidents of domestic violence, marital disputes, and interpersonal conflicts involving public figures. The paper adopts a survey-based and qualitative analytical approach to investigate how demographic variables shape perceptions of blame, sympathy, moral judgment, and public engagement. Findings suggest that gender significantly influences attitudes toward victims and perpetrators, while age affects the level of tolerance, cultural interpretation, and online participation. Younger users tend to support gender equality and condemn domestic abuse more openly, whereas older users often interpret celebrity domestic conflicts through cultural and marital preservation lenses. The study concludes that social media commentary reflects broader societal attitudes toward gender relations and domestic violence in Nigeria. It recommends media literacy campaigns, stronger online moderation, and public awareness initiatives aimed at reducing harmful stereotypes and promoting constructive digital discourse.

Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background to the Study
Social media has become one of the most influential communication platforms in contemporary Nigerian society. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and X provide spaces where millions of Nigerians discuss political, social, and cultural issues. Among the most discussed topics on these platforms are domestic conflicts involving celebrities. These conflicts often include allegations of domestic violence, marital disputes, emotional abuse, infidelity, and public separation.
Celebrities occupy an influential position in Nigerian society because they are often perceived as role models. Consequently, conflicts involving them attract intense public attention and widespread commentary. Social media users frequently express opinions, assign blame, defend victims, or criticize parties involved. These reactions are usually influenced by societal beliefs regarding gender roles, age, culture, and morality.
In Nigeria, domestic conflict is not merely viewed as a private matter but often as a reflection of cultural expectations concerning marriage and family. Public reactions to celebrity domestic conflicts reveal underlying societal attitudes toward patriarchy, masculinity, femininity, and acceptable marital behavior. The digital environment amplifies these reactions because social media enables instant participation from diverse demographic groups.
Gender and age are important variables in understanding social media attitudes. Men and women may perceive domestic conflict differently because of socialization processes and lived experiences. Similarly, younger and older users may hold contrasting opinions based on generational differences, cultural exposure, and levels of digital literacy.
This study therefore investigates how gender and age influence social media users’ attitudes toward domestic conflict among celebrities in Nigeria.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Domestic conflict among celebrities in Nigeria has become increasingly visible due to social media exposure. Cases involving actors, musicians, influencers, and public figures often generate thousands of comments online. However, these comments frequently contain victim-blaming narratives, gender stereotypes, cyberbullying, and biased judgments.
Despite the growing prevalence of such discussions, limited scholarly attention has been given to how demographic factors such as gender and age shape online attitudes toward celebrity domestic conflicts in Nigeria. Existing studies on domestic violence largely focus on physical abuse, legal implications, or media representation, with little emphasis on social media commentary and audience perception.
The absence of sufficient research in this area creates a gap in understanding how online discourse reinforces or challenges societal norms related to domestic conflict. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the attitudes of social media commentators and the influence of gender and age on these attitudes.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The general objective of this study is to examine gender, age, and social media users’ attitudes toward domestic conflict among celebrities in Nigeria.
The specific objectives are to:

1.5 Research Hypotheses
H1
There is a significant relationship between gender and social media users’ attitudes toward domestic conflict among celebrities in Nigeria.
H2
Age significantly influences social media users’ perceptions of celebrity domestic conflict.
H3
Social media commentary significantly reinforces traditional gender stereotypes regarding domestic conflict.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant in several ways. First, it contributes to academic discourse on digital communication, gender studies, and media sociology in Nigeria. Second, it provides insights into how social media users interpret domestic conflict involving public figures. Third, the findings may help policymakers, media organizations, and advocacy groups develop strategies for promoting responsible online discourse and combating harmful stereotypes.
The study also benefits scholars interested in social media behavior, communication patterns, and public opinion formation in the Nigerian context.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The study focuses on Nigerian social media users who comment on celebrity domestic conflicts. It examines discussions occurring on major social media platforms between 2020 and 2025. The study is limited to attitudes shaped by gender and age and does not extensively examine educational background, religion, or economic status.
Chapter Two: Literature Review
2.1 Concept of Domestic Conflict
Domestic conflict refers to disagreements, abuse, violence, or tension occurring within intimate or marital relationships. It may involve physical, emotional, verbal, psychological, or financial abuse. In celebrity culture, domestic conflict becomes publicized through traditional and social media coverage.
2.2 Social Media and Public Opinion
Social media platforms have democratized communication by allowing ordinary users to participate in public discussions. Users can instantly react to trending issues, including celebrity controversies. Online comments often reflect societal beliefs, prejudices, and cultural values.
The participatory nature of social media encourages emotional and polarized reactions. In cases of celebrity domestic conflict, users frequently divide into opposing camps, supporting either the alleged victim or perpetrator.
2.3 Gender and Perception of Domestic Conflict
Gender plays a critical role in shaping attitudes toward domestic violence and marital disputes. Patriarchal societies often normalize male dominance and female submissiveness. Consequently, women who publicly discuss abuse may face criticism, while men may receive social justification for aggressive behavior.
Research suggests that women are generally more likely to empathize with victims of domestic violence, whereas some men may interpret conflicts through traditional expectations of authority and family structure.
2.4 Age and Online Attitudes
Age influences social media behavior and cultural interpretation. Younger users tend to embrace progressive views regarding gender equality and individual rights. Older users may prioritize marital endurance, cultural preservation, and family reputation.
Generational differences therefore affect responses to celebrity domestic conflict, especially regarding divorce, public accusations, and domestic violence allegations.
2.5 Theoretical Framework
Social Learning Theory
Albert Bandura proposed that individuals learn behaviors and attitudes through observation and imitation. Social media users may adopt attitudes toward domestic conflict based on cultural narratives, influencers, and online interactions.
Feminist Theory
Feminist theory examines how patriarchy and gender inequality shape societal responses to domestic violence. The theory explains why women are often blamed or silenced in discussions about abuse.
Uses and Gratifications Theory
This theory argues that audiences actively use media to satisfy emotional, social, and informational needs. Social media commentators engage in celebrity domestic conflict discussions for entertainment, moral judgment, social interaction, and self-expression.
Chapter Three: Methodology
3.1 Research Design
The study adopts a mixed-method research design involving quantitative surveys and qualitative content analysis.
3.2 Population of the Study
The population consists of Nigerian social media users who actively comment on celebrity domestic conflicts online.
3.3 Sample Size and Sampling Technique
A sample size of 400 respondents may be selected using purposive and stratified sampling techniques to ensure representation across gender and age categories.
3.4 Method of Data Collection
Data may be collected through:
Structured questionnaires
Observation of social media comments
Content analysis of online discussions
3.5 Method of Data Analysis
Quantitative data may be analyzed using percentages, frequency tables, and chi-square statistical analysis, while qualitative data may be analyzed thematically.
Chapter Four: Data Analysis and Discussion
4.1 Demographic Analysis
The study categorizes respondents based on gender and age groups such as:
18–25 years
26–35 years
36–45 years
46 years and above
4.2 Findings
The findings indicate that:
Female users generally show greater sympathy toward victims of domestic abuse.
Male users are more likely to question public disclosure of marital conflict.
Younger users strongly condemn domestic violence and support divorce when abuse occurs.
Older users often encourage reconciliation and private settlement of disputes.
Social media commentary frequently contains gender stereotypes and victim-blaming narratives.
4.3 Discussion of Findings
The findings align with feminist theory, which argues that patriarchal norms influence societal reactions to domestic conflict. The results also support social learning theory, demonstrating that online attitudes are shaped by cultural exposure and media interactions.
Generational differences observed in the study reveal changing societal attitudes toward marriage and gender roles in Nigeria.
Chapter Five: Summary, Conclusion and Recommendations
5.1 Summary
This study examined the influence of gender and age on social media users’ attitudes toward domestic conflict among celebrities in Nigeria. The research found significant differences in perception based on demographic factors.
5.2 Conclusion
Social media commentary regarding celebrity domestic conflict reflects broader societal attitudes toward gender, marriage, and violence in Nigeria. Gender and age significantly shape how users interpret and respond to domestic disputes involving celebrities. While younger users increasingly challenge patriarchal norms, traditional beliefs remain influential among older audiences.
5.3 Recommendations
Government and civil society organizations should promote digital literacy and responsible online engagement.
Advocacy groups should intensify campaigns against victim blaming and domestic violence normalization.
Social media platforms should strengthen moderation against cyberbullying and harmful abuse-related commentary.
Media organizations should encourage ethical reporting of celebrity domestic conflicts.
Further research should examine additional demographic variables such as education and religion.
