JERUSALEM — Billionaire entrepreneur and WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum is donating $200 million to Shaare Zedek Medical Center in what is being described as the largest philanthropic contribution ever made to Israel’s healthcare system.
The donation will finance the construction of a new inpatient tower and residential housing for medical staff, a major expansion project expected to triple the size of the Jerusalem-based hospital. Hospital officials said the new facilities will help address growing healthcare demands in the city and improve long-term patient care capacity.
Koum, who co-founded WhatsApp before selling the messaging platform to Meta in a deal valued at nearly $19 billion, has increasingly emerged as a major donor to Jewish and pro-Israel causes worldwide.
Born in Ukraine to a Jewish family, Koum immigrated to the United States as a teenager and later became one of Silicon Valley’s most successful entrepreneurs. Since leaving Meta, he has maintained a relatively low public profile while quietly supporting a range of humanitarian, educational, and Jewish community initiatives.
Shaare Zedek Medical Center, one of Jerusalem’s leading hospitals, serves a diverse patient population from across Israel. The institution has long relied on philanthropic support for major infrastructure projects and medical development programs.
Hospital leadership praised the contribution as transformative, saying the expansion would strengthen emergency preparedness, improve patient services, and create additional accommodation for healthcare workers amid ongoing staffing pressures.
The donation also reflects a broader trend of large-scale private philanthropy playing an increasingly important role in Israel’s medical and research sectors, particularly as hospitals seek to expand facilities and modernize care systems to meet rising demand.
